This memorial pays tribute to two remarkable men from St George whose courage and service left an enduring mark on Australian history.
Squadron Leader John Jackson served with outstanding bravery during World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his achievements in the Middle East, where he destroyed seven enemy aircraft. Less than six months later, he led his squadron of Kittyhawks during the Battle of Port Moresby, playing a crucial role in preventing the Japanese advance into Papua New Guinea. Port Moresby’s international airport is named Jackson’s International Airport in his honour.
Warrant Officer Leonard Waters holds a special place in Australian and Aboriginal history as the first Aboriginal fighter pilot to serve in the Royal Australian Air Force. Born and raised on farmland outside St George, Waters enlisted in 1942 and worked tirelessly to rise through the ranks at a time when opportunities for Indigenous Australians were extremely limited. After qualifying as a fighter pilot—an extraordinary achievement in itself—he flew P-40 Kittyhawks with No. 78 Squadron in the Pacific theatre.
Waters completed 95 operational missions, providing vital air support during the final stages of the war. His aircraft, which was named “Black Magic” by the previous pilot, became a symbol of his determination, skill, and pride in representing both his community and Australia. After the war, he remained an inspirational figure whose story continues to be shared nationwide.
Together, the legacies of Jackson and Waters are honoured at this monument overlooking the Balonne River — a lasting tribute to the courage, dedication, and pioneering spirit of two local heroes.
