Thallon Rail Centre

Listing Details:

The Thallon Rail Centre celebrates the town’s proud railway heritage and strong rural roots and is housed in a restored heritage Goods Shed dating from 1913. Originally built by Queensland Rail, the shed retains its original interior and was donated to the Thallon Progress Association, a community group working to promote and support the town. The building was carefully relocated from the rail corridor to a central site in Thallon, where it has been transformed into an interpretive museum showcasing local rail history, memorabilia and stories from those who lived and worked on the railway.

Thallon was established as a rail town in 1911, and for much of the 20th century the railway was central to the town’s economy, supporting grain, wool and livestock industries and employing a large proportion of residents. The Rail Centre recognises this legacy and the role rail played in helping the Balonne region prosper.

The centre is unmanned, with entry costing $5 per person. Tickets and a key to access the fenced site can be purchased from the Thallon Café (7am–7pm daily) or the Thallon Hotel (10am till late daily), and occasionally from the Thallon Information Station during limited opening hours. With no electricity on site, the centre is best visited during daylight hours.
