Out here, a visit isn’t just a holiday.
It’s a tank of fuel that keeps a servo open.
A meal that keeps a café trading another week.
A conversation that reminds a small town it hasn’t been forgotten.
The Outback Queensland Tourism campaign “Out here, every visit counts” captures something locals have always known: travel in the outback isn’t just about ticking off destinations, it’s about sustaining communities, livelihoods and connection. Every cuppa, overnight stay and local purchase helps keep the doors open and the lights on across regions like ours.
Here in the St George Region, that message feels especially real right now.
We know travel is harder than it used to be. Fuel prices, uncertainty and “maybe next time” plans have hit regional towns hard. But if you’re already on the road, or thinking about changing your mind, here are a few simple ways to make your visit matter a little more:
Shop local (even small things matter)
When you’re travelling through our towns of Hebel, Dirranbandi, Thallon, Mungindi, Nindigully, St George or Bollon, spending local goes further than you might realise.
Buy your essentials from local stores instead of stocking up elsewhere.
Grab a coffee, bakery treat or pub lunch in town. Pick up fuel, ice or supplies locally when you can. Plan your purchases- think about birthday gifts or even Christmas (if you wanted to be super organised), we’re sure to have something in our towns to make that loved one smile.
That single stop can directly support local jobs and family‑run businesses that rely heavily on visitor trade, especially during quieter seasons.
Stay a little longer (there’s more than you think)
Many travellers pass through the St George region thinking they’ve “seen it all” in an afternoon. We understand, but we’d love you to stay.
Consider:
An extra night in town instead of pushing on. A relaxed afternoon by one of our 7 rivers. Exploring local parks, fishing spots and easy walks. Hop on a tour or explore one of our self-drive, self-walk tours. Enjoying a sunset, a meal and an early night before hitting the road again. Make sure you take your time, soak in all that the outback has to offer!
Plan with confidence using the Balonne Shire fuel tracker
We know one of the biggest reasons travellers hesitate right now is fuel uncertainty and that concern is completely understandable.
To help visitors travel with confidence, Balonne Shire Council have joined 5 other regional councils and has introduced a fuel tracker that shows current fuel availability across the region, including St George and surrounding towns. The tracker is updated regularly and is designed to help travellers plan ahead and feel more secure on the road.
It’s a practical response to very real concerns, created because regional communities simply can’t afford for travellers to stay away. Tourism is not a luxury out here, it’s a lifeline to our operators who rely on seasonal visitors.
Out here, your visit keeps families fed, doors open, and communities connected.
If you’re already travelling – we thank you!!
If you’re unsure, we understand.
If you’re thinking of skipping a stop, please know that your visit matters more than you might think.
Out here, every visit counts.
And out here, we’re really glad you came.
