As the days stretch longer and the sun shines brighter, the St George Region comes alive with the warmth and vibrancy of summer. From golden fields of grain to sparkling waterways and lively local events, there’s no better time to explore everything our region has to offer.

Experience the Heart of Harvest

Late spring and early summer mark one of the most exciting times in our rural calendar – grain harvest season. Across the St George Region, vast paddocks of wheat, barley, and Chickpea transform into a sea of gold, ready to be harvested.

Travelling the highways and backroads, you’ll spot headers moving steadily through the fields, trucks rumbling toward silos, and the unmistakable scent of freshly cut grain in the air. For those new to the region, it’s a sight that captures the essence of country life – a reminder of the hard work and dedication that sustains our communities.

If you’re keen to learn more, chat with locals at the Thallon pub, one of our towns Information centres or stop by one of the region’s agricultural supply stores – there’s always a friendly face willing to share stories about life on the land.

Cool Off by the Water

The Balonne River is the heart of St George and a perfect place to unwind on a warm day. Bring a picnic and relax under the shade of the gums, fire up one of our many free electric BBQs or cast a line for Yellowbelly or Cod.

If you’re looking for adventure hire a kayak or bike from Sandy town River Cruises and explore the gentle bends of the river- whether gliding along the water or pedalling the scenic river path.

Feeling the need for speed? Water skiing is a summer favourite on the St George Region, where locals and visitors alike make the most of the wide stretches of calm water. It’s the perfect way to cool off and take in the beauty of the river from a whole new angle.

If you have your own water vessel or bike, you’re not limited to just the Balonne River, all seven towns have their very own waterway, offering countless opportunities for fishing, paddling, and swimming.
